Autism Awareness: “My Heart Stopped…”

Salutations Everyone!

This journey has been such a blessing to me since the beginning… I met a phenomenal young woman by the name of Tanya Smith, and she is the one who encouraged me to start this journey… She always supports everything that I do and tells me that I’m an awesome person… But the truth is, she’s the amazing one… She’s strong, intelligent, and she’s so inspiring…

Tanya’s son has autism and she does a phenomenal job of raising autism awareness. She is actually the one who made me aware that April is Autism Awareness month. She wanted to share her story so that other young parents who have children with autism can see that they’re not alone and that there are other people with similar stories… So Tanya has written a series of letters which tell her story…I adore Tanya for being such a tenacious and courageous young woman…

Here is part 1 of Tanya’s story…

Dear World:

My name is Tanya Smith…I am a 35 year old woman and a mother of 3 beautiful children. My second child and only son (Aj) is autistic, and this is our story…I met Aj’s father in Jamaica; he is from England and I am from Canada. We met on a resort and we fell in love. A year later, he moved to Canada to spend the rest of his life with me (sounds like a fairy tale but that’s what really happened!)

Fast forward…

My best friend and I had gotten pregnant at the same time (on purpose because our first 2 were conveniently the same age as well) and August 26, 2010 my beautiful son was born. Gorgeous child, but he wouldn’t sleep! LOL

His father began to think that there might be something wrong; he would say to me “He fusses too much…” I just assumed that it was because he was a breastfed baby, so he was just hungry a lot. We started attending “mom and tot” groups, and Aj was reaching all of his milestones on time if not early! Not to mention he did score 10 on his APGAR test!

Then things began to change…

All of a sudden my best friend’s son, who is 3 months younger than my son, started doing things that Aj wasn’t… At first, we just thought that my friend’s son was just a really smart baby… Aj still wasn’t talking; everyone continued to say “He’s a boy! Boys talk later!” But he wasn’t even saying “mama” and that bothered me. He was also getting ear infections a lot…One day we went to the doctor for antibiotics; when the doctor found out that Aj wasn’t saying “mama” this “set off the alarms”… We left the doctor’s office not only with antibiotics, but with about 12 referrals for all over the place. I took it seriously and went downstairs (where I conveniently work) and faxed them right away. Occupational therapist, speech therapist, another ENT, hearing tests etc… We thought maybe Aj was hearing-impaired…

Nope…He wasn’t hearing-impaired…

We then took him to an ENT; yes, he had some fluid in his ears and “enlarged” tonsils and adenoids. So at 2 1/2 years old he went through surgery to remove his tonsils and adenoids and put tubes in his ears…

Nope…Still not talking…

But the ear infections did go away…Now he is delayed in more than just language…I saw the word “global delay” on a paper that I had to fax somewhere. At the time, I did not completely understand the meaning; even after some research, I was still unsure about what that meant.   After 2 years of running around, a customer asked me how my children were doing; because I worked there for the past 15 years  I know some of my customers longer than I know my husband ! So I kinda broke down and told her what was happening. She told me that she has donated thousands of dollars to the hospital my son was on the waiting list for and has NEVER asked them for a favor… She said “let me make a call”.. .

Tears began to fill up my eyes…

No word of a lie, the hospital called me a few days later… We found out that yes my best friend’s son was a really smart baby (still is) but…

Aj was autistic…

“Non-verbal…” “moderate to severe with a global delay…” He was 3 years old.

My heart stopped…

And I was very pregnant with my third (and last) child…I told my mom and my best friend…

Then I crawled into a hole for the next 2 years…

Yours respectfully,

A Broken Mother…
